Technorati colo move

I just posted an update regarding the status of Technorati.com and our colo move.

The short answer is, we've moved 2/3 of the old colo, search and tags are working, but slow, and blog claiming and blog lookups are not happy.

Our priorities are:

Stability and performance of the site.

Making sure blog claiming works.

Continued ping processing and indexing.

We will continue to move servers and network equipment over the next two weeks, but, at this point, we have enough capacity to run almost everything out of the new colo. Getting this far has been a ton of work for the ops team, late nights, long weekends, system pages at all hours of the day and night. I really appreciate their continued hard work and positive attitude. Ops and 7x24x365 duty is not for everyone. Throw a colo move of this magnitude into the mix and it is inspiring to hear them respond, "it's all part of the job".

Thanks guys, and thanks to the core engineering team and product team who continue to help out in any way they can.

What's the fastest way to turn an oil tanker?

A tidal wave.

Rather than focus on the laborious task of changing direction, it might very well be better to consider the absurd. If you can make a tidal wave, you can turn a lot of oil tankers. Of course, you need to figure out how not to sink them.

I was at a dinner party tonight with a bunch of people who, perhaps without knowing it, figured out how to make tidal waves. I suspect they did not focus on the specific problem of turning a single oil tanker. In fact, I think Niklas and Janus knew, once they had learned how to make tidal waves, they could do a lot more than turn ships. Thanks for a pleasant and illuminating evening.

Mass of a multi-dimensional cube

Recently I've been thinking a lot about multi-dimensional arrays. Don't ask me why, I can't tell you.

It's quite common to comment on the sparsity in a multi-dimensional array. In data warehousing this can be be quite helpful or the bane of your data management strategies. Keeping track of indexes and pointers can also be a royal pain.

Given a few dimensions, and knowing the expected size of any of the individual key spaces lends itself to the easy calculation of the volume of the multi-dimensional space.

You have two dimensions. Friends and Cities. You have 100 Friends. You are tracking 100 Cities. The possible combination of these keys is 100 x 100 or 10,000 cells in the space. But what if you wanted to estimate how many of your friends had visited each of the cities. This would certainly be much smaller.

So, you might estimate that most of your friends have probably visited 10 of the cities. Thus, there are only 10 x 100 cells filled in. But then, many of them may have visited the same cities, so you want to think about how many of the cities have been visited by any friends. Maybe most of the cities have been visited by 5 of your friends on average. Certainly there is a high likelihood that some of the cities haven't been visited by any of your friends.

Now, imagine that you have 6 or more dimensions. You are actually trying to model a much more complex set of keys and their combinations where not all combinations are likely to happen. Thus, you have lots of sparsity. But what about where you do have combinations?

Well, what's been racing through my mind is a visualization of the clusters, the density of the combinations and, that leads me to the notion of calculating the "mass of the multi-dimensional cube". Ok, it's really a multi-dimensional array as a cube has three dimensions, but data warehousing seems to use the cube concept.

There you have it, nothing conclusive but I thought I would coin my phrase.

Technorati indexes new White House Blog

My colleague Ian Kallen put up an excellent post about the change in Washington and, in particular, the new White House Blog. He was far too humble in stating his contribution to our new crawler architecture that is rolling out this month.

Technorati VP of Engineering talks with ZDNet

At the tail end of October, I had a chance to speak with Sumi Das over at ZDNet to talk about Technorati as part of their CIO Sessions.

We spoke for longer than the interview play time, but they did a great job editing it to keep it relevant to the series.

It was pretty cool to be able to look back on what we have accomplished in the 4 years I have been with Technorati and to be able share a little insight with those who might be interested.

I haven't seen myself on video in a long time and it was a bit freaky how much my body language made me feel like I was watching my own brother.

As your content and marketing becomes more portable and customizable by the user, what targeting techniques are available now and on the way? Moderator: Roman Bukary, Truviso. Not really a transcription, but got the gist of most of what was being said.

Being at the conference and on such a great panel really got me thinking about the future of advertising and content. I'd really like to see how we navigate the issues between privacy and utility. Clearly, the more an ad network knows about you, the better they can target ads, but, the riskier it will be that someone crosses the privacy line. Right now, I think it is safer to target the behavior profile rather than the individual profile and, more importantly, to be able to filter by context and end user initiated engagement.

Peter Hirshberg interviews Lawrence Lessig about Revolution

At the Aspen Ideas Festival,

Peter Hirshberg interviewed Lawrence Lessig about how his ideas have expanded beyond copyright policy and into the realm of a much needed revolution.

The U.S. Congress is broken. Stanford Law Professor and cyber visionary Lessig has set out on a simple mission: fix it.

The 3 minute interview covers some of Lessig's thinking about revolution in governance. In this instance, he is using the word, revolution, as in the revolution of the hands of a clock. They return to where they started. He is suggesting we need to return to founding ideals rather than requiring a radical change. This, in fact, is really what the American Revolution was about, though it also resulted in a radical change.

The basic premise in Lessig's view is, if our representatives were free of the dependency on campaign fund raising, they would be able to spend more time on addressing the issues of their constituency.

Speed and stability can make a huge difference

Over at Perry Web (Technorati? OK, Maybe I Do Care.) they noticed some of the improvements we've made in performance and stability on Technorati.

We've put a lot of effort into our search infrastructure over the last 3 quarters and I am extremely proud of our Operations team. Not only is our back end performance under 1 second almost all the time, the team was able to achieve this with very little additional expense.

I'm very excited to see someone posting good news since I suspect there a lot of others who have noticed but not thought to blog about it.

Finally, the other obvious thing that makes a huge difference is great people. That's what we have and we are looking to grow our team. Check out the job listings.

Great suggestions on fighting scrapers, reposters and sploggers

Miriam Schwab raises a very important issue about scrapers, reposters, and sploggers ripping off her content in WordPressGarage is being scraped! I want to stop them…now!.

The comments are very informative and I recommend reading through them all.

The basic problem is, you find your content being republished on some other site without your permission and want to stop them. Some of the suggestions are:

Alyk starts with the soft approach suggesting that you email them and ask them nicely to stop. This might actually work now and then, but for the hard core sploggers, you'll never find an email address and emailing may just tell them to add a live email address to their email spam lists. Yikes!

Jennifer suggests filing a TOS complaint with their hosting provider. She also suggests reading:

Jonathan Bailey suggests filing a DMCA with their hosting provider or file a complaint with their advertisers.

Having fought spam for many years, the best way to deal with this is to go after their pocket book. Track down an AdSense ID, file a complaint with Google or their other advertisers. If they can't make money easily, they'll look for other prey.

Alas, Evel Knievel is gone. He definitely lit up the imagination of a pre-teen. Jumping buses, jumping sharks, jumping ridiculous distances, obstacles and natural phenomena.

Who amongst us would seek fame and accept such a personal, physical price. Very few, I expect.

Hope that last big jump landed.

Technorati collects millions of blog posts every day — too many for the average human being to even try to track. As a Technorati power user, I've been fascinated by just how much I can find out using Technorati Search. If you're like me and you know how to construct just the right search, you can winnow the results to just what you are looking for.

That being said, I've read a lot of great feedback on Technorati, how we should organize the vastness of the blogosphere and help people find the good stuff and help great bloggers be found. In particular, I read a lot of blog posts asking us to build what bloggers want. Well, today we are releasing a major overhaul of the Technorati Home page and a completely new area of the site that emphasizes blogs, Technorati Topics. With Topics, we help you discover what bloggers are writing about in Entertainment, Technology, Politics, Sports, Business, and Life.

In Technorati - Why Crossing The Chasm Is Not Always a Good Idea, ExperienceCurve discusses how crossing the chasm may have its downside. Well, Techorati is still a young company. We have 30 great people, have accomplished much, are still alive today, and are ready to re-engage with the people that look to us to help make sense of the blogosphere.

As I said in my comments on the post above, "Personally, I'm bullish on Technorati :)". And why shouldn't I be. Great people have created incredible potential that Technorati now sits in the midst of. Our own employees, the bloggers who have stuck with us, and all of the blogosphere that continues to grow and react every day.

Technorati Authority and some cosmetic improvements

Some good feedback on our new Blog page and People pages. It's great to read good things and we have a lot more in store for May. Stay tuned. Also some comments about Technorati Authority.

Technorati Authority is the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months. The higher the number, the more Technorati Authority the blog has.

It is important to note that we measure the number of blogs, rather than the number of links. So, if I link to your blog many times, I still only count as +1 toward your authority. Of course, new links mean my +1 will last another 180 days.

Technorati Rank is calculated based on how far you are from the top as
expressed by the number of blogs linking to you. Since at the lower
end of the scale many blogs will have the same Technorati Authority, they will share the same Technorati Rank.

As of this writing, my blog has 16 inbound blogs, thus my Technorati Authority is 16. I'm sure there are many other blogs with 16 inbound blogs and we all have the same Technorati Rank.

The funniest thing I've read - EVER!

OMFG! ROTFL! I think my stomach is going explode.

I stumbled onto it while checking my Twitter stream. Lucky for me, twitter has been so broken I still had twitters from 3 days ago at the top of my list.

Adam had twittered, "Lindsay just sent me this: http://www.thewvsr.com/adsv... -- what a hoot!"

I followed the link, oh ok, here it is. Interesting, but not funny. maybe a little scary.

I looked through all the pictures and, on a whim, clicked on one of the links at the bottom, Fast Food Reviews. Well, the first few got me into Jeff Kay's writing style. By the time I got to KFC, it was the sheer pleasure of laughter so hard it hurt. It hurt BAAAD.

I cruised around a few more, KFC Bowl, following on the KFC theme. Here's an excerpt:

"My stomach sank. It appeared to have already been eaten at least once. It looked like a pipin’ hot bowl of vomit.

But, of course, I ate it anyway. And it was good, really good."

Technorati preparing for the next level

Dave Sifry, has posted several times this week sharing with the world just how far we have come in four years. I've been with Technorati for over 2 1/2 years and it's been a great ride so far with Dave providing awesome leadership, inspiration, and a technology foundtation we've been able to expand in many directions.

In Embracing Change, Dave talks about how he and the board have initiated the search for our next CEO. This person will have to be able to take us to the next level as a business. I am very proud of what we have accomplished. Traffic alone has grown almost 15X since I started. The number of employees hasn't even grown 3X. Talk about amazing things from amazing people.

The first 4 years have proven to me that Dave can get things started, grow them at a fantastic rate, and hire industry talent that gets things done. I love being counted in that group and thank Dave for helping me grow with Technorati.

In classic Sifry openness, he is sharing with all of you what he wants us to become and that, if there is someone out there who can grow us 15X or more again in the coming years, he wants that person on board yesterday.

Every day I think about how to make Technorati better, how to keep up our promise to Be of Service, how to scale the infrastructure and product. I also think about how to grow this business and continue to innovate. Dave has taught me that, not only is it ok to make mistakes, we should all be ready to make them - lots of them. Explode - a new, open social network

Just signed up for Explode and have my very own URL, dorion.

The sign up process was pretty brutal. It should have been easy, but a number of things went wrong.

Explode sign-up seems simple enough, but it has a few catches.

Your name: is actually going to be your username. However, I entered my First Last name, which, with the space removal they snuck into the mix and grabbing the first letter of my last name, became the equivalent of, firstl. Now try to log in if you don't know that.

I check my email and find the message. Nicely addressed to me with my name as I entered it. No sign of the username they're hiding somewhere for me.

Now they sneak the username on me. They tell me I can change it, but, after a number of tries later on, I give up and regsiter again with "Your name" as "dorion".

Of course, they only let you register one account per email. It appears your email address is actually the unique identifier. So, I use a different email address and this one, of course, ends up having the spam filter trap the registration email. A few minutes later, I find the trapped email, deliver it, and I'm on my way.

I was able to configure the widget and get it on my blog. Not the prettiest thing in the world, but this is pretty raw stuff. It is a bit odd that every time I return to my home page it tells me about the widget, how to get the code and fill in my profile. I've done all that; why do they keep taunting me.

Well, I can already see some stats from my new widget on my blog. Sadly, all the traffic is me checking it out, but the data gets there pretty fast.

I'll have to check it out tomorrow to see what else I can discover.

Over at the Huffington Post, Bill Katovsky opens with a little Technorati Top Search, end of year, foolery. You think he's going to play off the juxtaposition of Saddam and Britney, but No-o-o-o-o-o, he just takes several opportunities to dive head first into his own, narrow-minded, other people hatin', pile of manure.

Come on, comparing the Iraqi's initial attempts at the judiciary and executionary branches of government to Texas justice? The people of Iraq deserve better. They are conflicted, struggling, and, maybe it won't end well, but they don't deserve your comparison.

And, by the way, dude, what about Britney? If you wanted to talk about the top searches, you should have read my post first.

You never even go into the bizarre combination of people's morbid fascination with their, well, er, I guess, morbid fascination. Hang 'em or bang 'em? I don't know why people keep searching for Britney, but I'm sure they'll be doing it a lot more in '07 than searching for Saddam.

Technorati Link Count Widget timing

In response to my last post, I decided to ping Technorati and see how quickly my link to Derek's post would show up in the Technorati index. That was, after all, part of his interest.

Well, this screenshot of a Tecnorati Cosmos search result shows that it was under 6 minutes. However, it took me a bit to run that search. So, seeing as I have a little advantage, I looked under the hood.

Technorati Link Count Widget name

Derek, an interesting proposal. We thought long and hard about what to name the widget. Yes, it does count links. Bloggers who use Technorati are used to thinking of their link counts. Thus, we chose to name the widget for the target audience of bloggers.

However, the average blog reader may not understand what link counts are. Thus, Blog Reactions, which is what the posts that contain the links can be considered, is a better name for that group of readers.

So, we ended up with a "product name" that was aimed at the people who might see the value in installing the Link Count Widget and text that was aimed at the majority of people who might be enticed to click through and see the reactions to the post they were reading by other bloggers.

Very cool OpenID use with commenting

I just posted a comment on a sad, but heart-felt post, footsteps, and livejournal asked me to authenticate. I selected OpenID and used my Technorati Profile. One click later on my "Authenticate your Identity" page and my comment had posted. You see, Technorati is an identity provider so every Technorati member has an open id.

Pretty cool. Amazingly simple.

recently sent in a support request asking how they might replace

- Technorati Favorites Widget, but be able to scope the list to blogs
they had tagged in their favorites.

This is a great request and totally doable. I love the fact that you
have embraced our Favorites feature and are using it to tag your
favorite blogs. Here

create a Favorites widget for the most recently updated blogs in your

Technorati Link Count Widget

Yesterday we launched the Link Count Widget (which you can see on my posts below, alas, no one links to me).

The javascript widget looks up blog reactions expressed as links to your post in real-time. It loads asynchronously to the page so your readers won't have to wait while the widget loads to start reading your blog.

It was a quick, fun project that can deliver a lot of new, dynamic value to your blog. If you write about things other bloggers like to link to, your readers can now see which of those posts stand out in the blogosphere.

If all you want to do is create a tag, no branch creation involved:

You can run
cvs rtag -r FOO_BARa FOO_BAR_newtagname mainsite

And it will create a new tag that is based on the tag.

Branching from a tag

Looking at CVS and it looks like you can create a CVS branch when ever you want.

For Example.
Tag is FOO_BARa
And its whats live on the servers and we need to patch a file or 2

You can run
cvs rtag -b -r FOO_BARa FOO_BARa_branch mainsite

And it will create a new branch that is based on the tag.
Then just check out the new branch add the changes and deploy it.

Another really cool thing on Technorati, once you've created your Favorites, is to syndicate a widget to your blog. You can even create a dynamic blogroll and use Technorati Favorites to control what shows up. Check out the Technorati Widget page.

You can see my Favorites Widget in my sidebar right on this blog. We also just released Tags for Favorites. Now you can tag your favorites on Technorati and easily switch from one group of blogs you like to read to another. And, any blog can be tagged as many times as you want so it can be in many groups.

Just a quick check of the latest Yahoo! Maps. I like it. The flash is pretty fast and the default location is my zip when I'm logged in. The slider to zoom is a bit more cumbersome than before. I liked the radio buttons to just pick a zoom level.

Just went to my Technorati members page and there was the searchlet tab. Copied that into my blog template and, voila, I have a searchlet. Very cool.
