It's a weird world - Saddam, Miss Nevada, Dr Who, and Britney

Technorati Top Searches convey a really bizarre view of the world at the moment. The execution of Saddam Hussein dominates the searches with a number of variations. But still, the regulars are mixed in.

Miss Nevada : sex and misconduct
Youtube : seems like it's always there
Dr Who : sci-fi, geeky stuff
Britney : queen of white trash, what body part or body fluid is putting her in the news today?
Jobster : a little Web 2.0 never hurt anyone

What a way to end the year. And here is the one link of the execution that showed, almost, the real thing:

http://missnevadausa.blogspot.com/2006/12/unedited-uncensored-saddam-hussein.html

Talk about a weird place to find it. Eew.

Technorati Favorites widget using tagged Favorites

Thought some people might find this useful. A Technorati user
recently sent in a support request asking how they might replace
their blog roll with the http://technorati.com/account/favwidget.html
- Technorati Favorites Widget, but be able to scope the list to blogs
they had tagged in their favorites.

Here was my response:

This is a great request and totally doable. I love the fact that you
have embraced our Favorites feature and are using it to tag your
favorite blogs. Here
goes.

Per our instructions on http://technorati.com/account/favwidget.html,
you can
create a Favorites widget for the most recently updated blogs in your
Favorites
with:

<iframe src="http://widgets.technorati.com/faves/teendoc?t=blogs"
marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" style="border: 1px solid rgb(0, 0,
0); padding: 0pt;" frameborder="0" height="400" scrolling="auto"
width="200"></iframe>

<iframe src="http://widgets.technorati.com/faves/teendoc?t=blogs"
marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" style="border: 1px solid rgb(0, 0,
0); padding: 0pt;" frameborder="0" height="400" scrolling="auto"
width="200"></iframe>

However, we don't tell you how to do the same thing for a subset of
your blogs
that you have tagged. Let's say you wanted to list the most recently
updated
blogs you had tagged Fertility. It's quite simple. All you need to do
is chagne
the src= part of the iframe tag as follows:

<iframe src="http://widgets.technorati.com/faves/teendoc/tag/
Fertility?t=blogs" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" style="border:
1px solid rgb(0, 0, 0); padding: 0pt;" frameborder="0" height="400"
scrolling="auto" width="200"></iframe>

Note how I changed:

src="http://widgets.technorati.com/faves/teendoc?t=blogs"

to

src="http://widgets.technorati.com/faves/teendoc/tag/Fertility?t=blogs"

That's it.

Also, here is a short piece of HTML that, if you save to your PC and
open in a
browser will show you two different widgets with a header.

*** BEGIN HTML JUST BELOW ***

<h1>Favorites Blogroll with tag = Technorati</h1>

<iframe src="http://widgets.technorati.com/faves/dorion/tag/
Technorati?t=blogs" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" style="border:
1px solid rgb(0, 0, 0); padding: 0pt;" frameborder="0" height="400"
scrolling="auto" width="200"></iframe>

<h1>Favorites Blogroll with tag = Me</h1>

<iframe src="http://widgets.technorati.com/faves/dorion/tag/Me?
t=blogs" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" style="border: 1px solid rgb
(0, 0, 0); padding: 0pt;" frameborder="0" height="400"
scrolling="auto" width="200"></iframe>

*** END HTML JUST ABOVE ***

Technorati Link Count Widget

Yesterday we launched the Link Count Widget (which you can see on my posts below, alas, no one links to me).

The javascript widget looks up blog reactions expressed as links to your post in real-time. It loads asynchronously to the page so your readers won't have to wait while the widget loads to start reading your blog.

It was a quick, fun project that can deliver a lot of new, dynamic value to your blog. If you write about things other bloggers like to link to, your readers can now see which of those posts stand out in the blogosphere.

A few folks have already commented on it and installed it:

Well, yes, I did post those notes, but, since our site runs on Pacific time, we were actually and not really .

So, we might have

Good feedback on Technorati recency and authority search

Eli Horne had some good observations about Technorati Search, authority filtering, and recency of posts in regard to a Technorati top search: Kyra Phillips.

You can read more about it and my comments on how to use some of the more advanced search features on Technorati here.

People say the nicest things sometimes

Thank you for the kind words. We aim to be of service and I'm glad to hear you like our service and support.

Technorati is an incredibly fast-growing and ambitious project, so small blips like that are to be expected. What's surprising and delightful is the way they handle problems and continue to improve. I've been gradually growing addicted to this site, and I look forward to seeing where it goes from here. Happy birthday Technorati!

A new Technorati - a new beginning

We just pushed a major new version of Technorati live after several months of hard work. We're hoping we've met our goals of making it easier to find what you are looking for with Search, making it fun to find something interesting to read with Discover, and helping individuals organize the blogs they like to read with Favorites.

Dave has a great post about everything we did on the front end, in the middle, and behind the scenes here.

A HUGE congratulations to the best team I've ever worked with! Thanks to all of you, Dorion

+1 for the marriage of equals

The Republic of T. makes a well thought out and compelling case for marriage for the purpose of protecting legal rights in What Marriage Lite Gets You.

I haven't blogged about anything other than work and family in the past, but after reading this post, I felt compelled to speak out and link.

Marriage as a right, as a ritual, as a protection, as a union, must be made available to all. Period.

Thank you Terrance.

Just a plain rtag

If all you want to do is create a tag, no branch creation involved:

You can run
cvs rtag -r FOO_BARa FOO_BAR_newtagname mainsite

And it will create a new tag that is based on the tag.

Branching from a tag

Looking at CVS and it looks like you can create a CVS branch when ever you want.

For Example.
Tag is FOO_BARa
And its whats live on the servers and we need to patch a file or 2

You can run
cvs rtag -b -r FOO_BARa FOO_BARa_branch mainsite

And it will create a new branch that is based on the tag.
Then just check out the new branch add the changes and deploy it.

A few more kind words from a new blogger

It's great to read that our users, especially new bloggers like Franck, find Technorati useful and easy to use. Read a little more of Franck's Technorati Adventure.

And here are a few more helpful hints for Technorati Favorites.

Ersten user Favorites Tags zu benutzen

Peter, ich moechte dir congratulieren. Du bist den ersten user Technorati Favorites tags zu benutzen. Ich hoffe das alles geht gut.

Check out Peter's Blog.

Some helpful explanation of Technorati Membership

Here's a nice little bit about Technorati and what Signing up can do for you and your blog: RSS Feeds Day 5: Technorati.

Another really cool thing on Technorati, once you've created your Favorites, is to syndicate a widget to your blog. You can even create a dynamic blogroll and use Technorati Favorites to control what shows up. Check out the Technorati Widget page.

You can see my Favorites Widget in my sidebar right on this blog. We also just released Tags for Favorites. Now you can tag your favorites on Technorati and easily switch from one group of blogs you like to read to another. And, any blog can be tagged as many times as you want so it can be in many groups.

Check out my Favorites. Look in the right hand sidebar and you'll see some of my, albeit experimental, tags.

Kind words and tale of knights and triumph

Truly an imaginative tale, A Tale, Sister Marlene, Stephen Covey, Mike Sigers, & Power Linking, but one worth reading.

Our own Janice gets some high praises for solving the mystery and freeing the "imprisoned knights of the blog".

Flattered, psyched, and getting pumped up

Just stumbled on to this,

nothing like a quick vanity search to see if anyone cares. Thanks, Arjen.

I'll be speaking at the upcoming MySQL Users Conference where I'll be doing a talk, Technorati: Scaling the Real Time Web. I'm really looking forward to this ... better start getting my slides ready.
